Using a digitised or manual otoscope, you will receive an examination of your ears to determine if wax is present and likely causing your reduced hearing. Even if only one ear appears to be causing you a problem, both ears will be examined as per best clinical practice.
If there’s no wax present or your ears appear abnormal in any way, a remote review can be sought via an Audiologist. You will have the option to visualise inside the ear via a digital device at no extra cost. A report can be produced for your GP, with your consent, if required.
This involves using a very fine sterile suction device to gently remove any excess wax from the ears. It’s a dry (no water introduced) procedure and generally-classed as one of the safest methods. It’s suitable for people who have previously had a perforated eardrum (at least 12 months post-healing), previous infections or fragile lining of the ear. This is not an exhaustive list and will be discussed during the consultation.
This is NOT the old-fashioned ‘syringing’! It involves using a pulsating stream of water under controlled pressure to effectively flush the wax out. The wax is collected in a container held under the ear. This is not suitable for people who have had a perforated eardrum, mastoid cavity, vertigo or suspected ear infection. This is not an exhaustive list and will be discussed during the consultation.
This method involves using a microscope and special forceps (Crocodile forceps) to gently reach into the ear canal and remove the ear wax. It’s used when the wax has moved closer to the opening of the ear canal making it easy to grasp but doesn’t require irrigation or suctioning. It’s also suitable for people who are sensitive to noise or the sensation of water in the ear.
